Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) : The Importance of it

[saya nak berbahasa inggeris sket kali ni, blh kan~ kalau ada kesilapan, tolongla betolkan ye. komen anda dialu2kan~ ;)]

Hmm. its been so long since i last updated this blog. hehe. i'm currently quite busy adding more features to one of my company's source of money (mwahahahaha), www.hartanah.net.

For today's post, i would like to review the importance of CSS to us (Internet & Website users) and to all website's developers. 2.0 web rules! :) Actually, i wanted to review about this about quite a long time ago but, as i said it before, i didn't have much time to write it.

Before this, most of website developer are using table in their website layout. Even though we can use table for arranging the layout, but, table limits our design and make our website loads slower. So, as for this topic, i wanted state 9 importance of CSS in making your way to creating your website as you desired. (This was made from my reviewing from another websites references)

[-9 Importance of CSS-]

> A CSS style sheet works well with HTML

HTML looks quite plain when it is used independently in website development, but when we combined HTML with CSS, they can result in technically stronger website and beautiful page design.

> Website loads a lot faster and reduce bandwidth usage

The reason why CSS is a favourite of most of nowadays web developer is that CSS are lighter than table layouts, which saves a lots of bandwidth usage and make the website loads faster. The style sheet is downloaded only once and stored in the cache memory, so subsequent pages load faster.

> CSS allows you to position your element anywhere in the webpage

Web developers/designers love to use CSS because it allows them to position their element where ever they want in the web page. If during any phase of web development the developer feels that particular links or columns are not going well with the situation then it becomes easier for them to position them easily using CSS. CSS helps them to reduce any risks while they maintaining the website.

> CSS is compatible with all web browsers

CSS is combined with HTML or XHTML by web developers for web application development because it is compatible with all web browsers. The sites that use CSS appear similar in all the web browsers.

> CSS can be used to create print-friendly web pages

CSS also provide the web developers/designers building their HTML based web applications because they allow them to create print friendly web pages. These web pages can be easily printed. The difficulties colours, images and other things which are difficult to be printed can be eliminated and printed easily.

> CSS style sheets allows the user to customize the webpage

Now days many websites allow the user to change the layout of the website without affecting the content. The CSS style sheets which are stored externally allow the user to make requisite changes by themselves. Most of the modern browsers give user the liberty to define their own style sheets like changing some font properties etc.

> CSS style sheets makes it easier for your website to feature in search engines

The CSS style sheets are favoured by web developers because they allow them to position their elements as per their wish anywhere in web application. Positioning helps to project the main contents first, so that it is easily captured by web spiders. CSS also gives cleaner HTML codes thus cutting down the job of web spider to search the real content from junk code.

CSS allows the web pages to have absolute consistency

One of the reasons for using CSS during web development is that they allow consistency to all web pages. All the expressions and texts will get their characteristics from external style sheet. Web developers need not to worry about the change in characteristics of the elements because they can be easily altered at any stage of web development by using CSS.

> CSS lends portability to content

By using CSS you can make separate style sheets for different media. This provides you the great flexibility in presenting your content. CSS allows you to redefine the characteristics of elements in a website to suit the need of the situation. e.g : A separate style sheet will allow you to redefine the characteristics of certain elements so that they are easier to be printed. Also the user will never come to know that you had restructured the characteristics for their benefit.

CSS is created to make the things easier for your website and also to give you control over different elements in your website. Utilizing benefits of CSS will give you popular user friendly web pages.

Thanks for reading. I'm grateful if you could give any feedback for this topic. See you later in next posting~ :)

Google Chrome Experimental Project

Hi!!

Hello world!
hoho~ while surfing the internet, finding my resources for completing my workloads, i've stumbled upon quite an interesting blog which, i assumed owned by Google. hmm... the interesting part of this blog is that this blog is experimenting the new product by Google; "Google Chrome" web browser (which will be refer as "chrome" herein after).

The blog, which given the name of chromeexperiments.com, shows us various type of chrome experiment done by them. But, the most experiment that attracted me to write this blog and share it to you is the "gravity" experiment.

Well, as you all know, gravity can be define as the force of attraction between all masses in the universe. So, the interesting part of this so-called gravity experiment is, they experiment it on Google homepage. And, as we all know, gravity will pull all objects; be it on the ground, or on the tree; towards the center of earth, right? So, this concept is also used in this little experiment. But, in chrome, they added another amazing features, which user can drag the object to any where they like. hehe. sounds interesting right?

No more reading, and let this video shows the details. have fun!

If you wanted more explanation, you can go to chromeexperiments.com that provide this experiments.

or, if you wanted to try it, click here. [this is from chromeexperiments.com]

see ya!~

Peringatan Terakhir!

Apakah "60: Earth Hour" tu?
Macam mana nak join kempen tu?
Dapat apa kalau join kempen tu?
Seronokkah kempen tu?

So, macam mana nak join kempen ni?

Kenapa nak tutup lampu pulak?
Lampu, pc, fridge, tv, radio semua kena off ke?

Kenapa xsuruh TNB potong je letrik time tu?

hehehe. yelah. kalau TNB potong letrik time tu, apa jadi dengan lampu jalan? Mau jadi "Mass Accident" plak time tu. hehe. Lagipun, bukan semua org yang nak join kan. Mereka mungkin ada sebab sendiri. So, xleh nak wat camtu. ;)

Kenapa kalau kita matikan lampu, kita dapat selamatkan dunia?

hmmm, Teknologi semakin canggih, zaman semakin pesat membangun.

We've turned the lights out. Now it's your turn - Earth Hour."

[sumber: Wikipedia: Earth Hour]

hehe. menarik kan?~ hehe~ tapi di United States, Colombia, Canada, Denmark, Ireland dan UK jelah time tu. Mungkin lepas ni, Google akan hitamkan Google's Malaysia pulak? hehehe~

Jadi, apa tunggu lagi, Saya dah daftar. Anda bila pulak? ;)

Song for Gaza

Hi guys,

As u all know, Gaza now is quite a big issue for the whole world. I'm not mentioning what has happened to them as all of u had already know what happen. So, just to show that we all care, I'm just promoting a song for Gaza that I've come across while surfing the net reading about Gaza news.

A song writter, named Michael Heart, has created a song for Gaza, titled "We will not go down (Song for Gaza)". You can just search in youtube, for this song. Or, you can just go to his Official Website. In his official website, u can even care to donate to organization called "UNRWA", which a special organization dedicated to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people.

Show that you care~

We will not go down Lyrics:
WE WILL NOT GO DOWN (Song for Gaza)
(Composed by Michael Heart)
Copyright 2009

A blinding flash of white light
Lit up the sky over Gaza tonight
People running for cover
Not knowing whether they’re dead or alive

They came with their tanks and their planes
With ravaging fiery flames
And nothing remains
Just a voice rising up in the smoky haze

We will not go down
In the night, without a fight
You can burn up our mosques and our homes and our schools
But our spirit will never die
We will not go down
In Gaza tonight

Women and children alike
Murdered and massacred night after night
While the so-called leaders of countries afar
Debated on who’s wrong or right

But their powerless words were in vain
And the bombs fell down like acid rain
But through the tears and the blood and the pain
You can still hear that voice through the smoky haze

We will not go down
In the night, without a fight
You can burn up our mosques and our homes and our schools
But our spirit will never die
We will not go down
In Gaza tonight

SEO Starter Guide: Continuation of the topic

Basically, i've covered 4 topics in previous posting. So, for the rest of the topic, you can read it on your own from the Google's SEO: Starter Guide e-book.

Thanks. ;)

SEO Starter Guide: Improve the structure of your URLs

Creating descriptive categories and filenames for the documents on your website can not only help you keep your site better organized, but it could also lead to better crawling of your documents by search engines. Also, it can create easier, "friendlier" URLs for those that want to link to your content. Visitors may be intimidated by extremely long and cryptic URLs that contain few recognizable words.

URLs like these can be confusing and unfriendly. Users would have a hard time reciting the URL from memory or creating a link to it. Also, users may believe that a portion of the URL is unnecessary, especially if the URL shows many unrecognizable parameters. They might leave off a part, breaking the link.

Some users might link to your page using the URL of that page as the anchor text. If your URL contains relevant words, this provides users and search engines with more information about the page than an ID or oddly named parameter would.

Google is good at crawling all types of URL structures, even if they're quite complex, but spending the time to make your URLs as simple as possible for both users and search engines can help. Some webmasters try to achieve this by rewriting their dynamic URLs to static ones; while Google is fine with this, we'd like to note that this is an advanced procedure and if done incorrectly, could cause crawling issues with your site. To learn even more about good URL structure, we recommend this Webmaster Help Center page on creating Google-friendly URLs.

Good practices for URL structure

  1. Use words in URLs - URLs with words that are relevant to your site's content and structure are friendlier for visitors navigating your site. Visitors remember them better and might be more willing to link to them.
    • Avoid:
      • using lengthy URLs with unnecessary parameters and session IDs
      • choosing generic page names like "page1.html"
      • using excessive keywords like "baseball-cards-baseball-cards-baseballcards.
        htm"
  2. Create a simple directory structure - Use a directory structure that organizes your content well and is easy for visitors to know where they're at on your site. Try using your directory structure to indicate the type of content found at that URL.
    • Avoid:
      • having deep nesting of subdirectories like ".../dir1/dir2/dir3/dir4/dir5/dir6/page.html"
      • using directory names that have no relation to the content in them
  3. Provide one version of a URL to reach a document - To prevent users from linking to one version of a URL and others linking to a different version (this could split the reputation of that content between the URLs), focus on using and referring to one URL in the structure and internal linking of your pages. If you do find that people are accessing the same content through multiple URLs, setting up a 301 redirect from non-preferred URLs to the dominant URL is a good solution for this.
    • Avoid:
      • having pages from subdomains and the root directory (e.g. "domain.com/ page.htm" and "sub.domain.com/page.htm") access the same content
      • mixing www. and non-www. versions of URLs in your internal linking structure
      • using odd capitalization of URLs (many users expect lower-case URLs and remember them better)

SEO Starter Guide: Make use of the "description" meta tag

A page's description meta tag gives Google and other search engines a summary of what the page is about. Whereas a page's title may be a few words or a phrase, a page's description meta tag might be a sentence or two or a short paragraph. Google Webmaster Tools provides a handy content analysis section that'll tell you about any description meta tags that are either too short, long, or duplicated too many times (the same information is also shown for <title> tags). Like the <title> tag, the description meta tag is placed within the <head> tag of your HTML document.

Description meta tags are important because Google might use them as snippets for your pages.
Note that we say "might" because Google may choose to use a relevant section of your page's visible text if it does a good job of matching up with a user's query. Alternatively, Google might use your site's description in the Open Directory Project if your site is listed there (learn how to prevent search engines from displaying ODP data). Adding description meta tags to each of your pages is always a good practice in case Google cannot find a good selection of text to use in the snippet. The Webmaster Central Blog has an informative post on improving snippets with better description meta tags.

Words in the snippet are bolded when they appear in the user's query. This gives the user clues about whether the content on the page matches with what he or she is looking for. Below is another example, this time showing a snippet from a description meta tag on a deeper page (which ideally has its own unique description meta tag) containing an article.

Good practices for description meta tags

  1. Accurately summarize the page's content - Write a description that would both inform and interest users if they saw your description meta tag as a snippet in a search result.
    • Avoid:
      • writing a description meta tag that has no relation to the content on the page
      • using generic descriptions like "This is a webpage" or "Page about baseball
        cards"
      • filling the description with only keywords
      • copy and pasting the entire content of the document into the description meta
        tag
  2. Use unique descriptions for each page - Having a different description meta tag for each page helps both users and Google, especially in searches where users may bring up
multiple pages on your domain (e.g. searches using the site: operator). If your site has
thousands or even millions of pages, hand-crafting description meta tags probably isn't
feasible. In this case, you could automatically generate description meta tags based on
    each page's content.
    • Avoid:
      • using a single description meta tag across all of your site's pages or a large
        group of pages

SEO Starter Guide: Create Unique, accurate page titles

A title tag tells both users and search engines what the topic of a particular page is. The <title> tag should be placed within the <head> tag of the HTML document. Ideally, you should create a unique title for each page on your site.

If your document appears in a search results page, the contents of the title tag will usually appear in the first line of the results (If you're unfamiliar with the different parts of a Google search result, you might want to check out the anatomy of a search result video by Google engineer Matt Cutts, and this helpful diagram of a Google search results page.) Words in the title are bolded if they appear in the user's search query. This can help users recognize if the page is likely to be relevant to their search.

The title for your homepage can list the name of your website/business and could include other bits of important information like the physical location of the business or maybe a few of its main focuses or offerings.

Titles for deeper pages on your site should accurately describe the focus of that particular page and also might include your site or business name.

Good practices for page title tags
  1. Accurately describe the page's content - Choose a title that effectively communicates the topic of the page's content.
    • Avoid:
      • choosing a title that has no relation to the content on the page
      • using default or vague titles like "Untitled" or "New Page 1"
  2. Create unique title tags for each page - Each of your pages should ideally have a unique title tag, which helps Google know how the page is distinct from the others on your site.
    • Avoid:
      • using a single title tag across all of your site's pages or a large group of pages
  3. Use brief, but descriptive titles - Titles can be both short and informative. If the title is too long, Google will show only a portion of it in the search result.
    • Avoid:
      • using extremely lengthy titles that are unhelpful to users
      • stuffing unneeded keywords in your title tags

Google's Search Engine Optimization: Starter Guide (Introduction)

Google's Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide
version 1.1, published 13 November 2008

Welcome to Google's Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide. This document first began as an effort to help teams within Google, but we thought it'd be just as useful to webmasters that are new to the topic of search engine optimization and wish to to improve their sites' interaction with both users and search engines. Although this guide won't tell you any secrets that 'll automatically rank your site first for queries in Google (Sorry!), following the best practice s outlined below will make it easier for search engines to both crawl and index your content.

Search engine optimization os often about making small modifications to parts of your website. When viewed individually, these changes might seem like incremental improvements, but when combined with other optimizations, they could have a noticeable impact on your site's user experience and performance in organic search results. You're likely already familiar with many of the topics in this guide, because they're essential ingredients for any webpage, but you may not be making the most out of them.

Even though this guide's title contains the words "search engine", we'd like to say that you should base your optimization decisions first and foremost on what's best for the visitors of your site. They're the main consumers of your content and are using search engines to find your work. Focusing too hard on specific tweaks to gain ranking in the organic results of search engines may not deliver the desired results. Search engine optimization is about putting your site's bost foot forward when it comes to visibility in search engines.

An example may help our explanations, so we've created a fictitious website to follow throughout the guide. For each topic, we've fleshed out enough information about the site to illustrate the point being covered. Here's some background information about the site we'll use:
  • Website/business name: "Brandon's Baseball Cards"
  • Domain name: brandonsbaseballcards.com
  • Focus: Online-only baseball card sales, price guides, articles, and news content
  • Size: Small - 250 pages
Your site may be smaller or larger than this and offer vastly different content, but the optimization topic we discussed below should apply to sites of all sizes anf types.

We hope our guide gives you some fresh ideas on how to improve your website, and we'd love to hear your questions feedbacks, and success stories in the Google Webmaster Help Group.
